Saturday: Arrival in San Jose

Arrive at San Jose International Airport, meet your English-speaking driver and transfer to your hotel. Time at leisure to relax and recuperate from your flight. In the late afternoon meet your Captain (tour manager) and fellow travelers for a welcome reception that begins our family adventure and treasure hunt!! Each family will receive a message in a bottle and a chest! Together with the kids we will learn the interesting story about Escazu (part of San Jose where our hotel is located), including its name and the meaning behind it. We will then head out for a delicious dinner at a local family restaurant. The first step of the treasure hunt will be completed tonight!! (D)

Sunday: San Jose | Ciudad Colon | Turrialba

This morning we continue our adventure. Our first stop will be in Ciudad Colon where we will enjoy a short walk through the village and find out about the history and way of life. We will learn about gold and jade and the second step of our treasure hunt will be completed!! Later, we will be welcomed into the house and workshop of a skilled local artisan to learn about a very unique tradition in Costa Rica, the Masquerades. The artisans design and build masks of clay, paper and glue. They paint them and create what is called a “maroon.” This is a tradition that has continued since the 17th century. The “maroons” can be different depending on many things, but they are always very funny, meant to make people laugh. We will join the artist who will teach us how to create our own masquerades! Later on, we will relax and enjoy a home-cooked meal, prepared by our host’s mother and sister in a wood powered kitchen, the traditional way. Then, we will dance with the cimarrona! After we bid farewell to our hosts, we will be on our way to Turrialba. During the drive the kids will have the opportunity to play with Jorge, the white-faced monkey (an app developed in Costa Rica for the kids to play and learn at the same time). The evening in Turrialba is at leisure. (B, L)

Monday: Turrialba

In the morning we will explore our surroundings and travel 3,000 years back through time to learn about Costa Rican history with a visit to one of the largest and most important archeological sites, the Guayabo National Monument. Historians believe that nearly 10,000 people lived in this ancient city in pre-Columbian times, surrounded by lush jungle. (Make sure to have your chest with you today to continue the treasure hunt!) This area is also rich with flora and fauna, home to a wide variety of birds such as toucans, and animals such as armadillos, squirrels and coatis. In the afternoon we embark on a Golden Bean Coffee Tour at a local plantation. Here we will experience the daily life in a natural environment where one of the best coffee grains in the world is produced. You will have the opportunity to play with coffee beans and to keep some as part of the treasure hunt! We will witness the process from farming to measuring, selecting and weighing, to the preparation for export to various parts of the world. Our crowning glory is tasting the finest Costa Rican coffee with five senses. We will return to our hotel in the late afternoon with time at leisure (B, L)

Tuesday: Turrialba | Tortuguero

Early this morning we head toward Tortuguero, the Costa Rican Amazones! We will stop for breakfast at a local restaurant before transferring to the pier to board a motor boat that will take us to Tortuguero. Today will be filled with spotting and naming animals and learning about their habits. We will arrive at our lodge in the late morning, with some time to freshen up before a welcome cocktail and lunch. The afternoon will be free for you to play Costa Rican games with your Captain or venture out on your own and explore the town of Tortuguero. In the evening we will head out together to experience a turtle observation night** and if we are lucky, to see the turtles hatching and finding their way to the ocean. (B, L)

Wednesday: Tortuguero

We will dedicate this morning to exploring the famous Tortuguero canals and have an unforgettable experience in this paradise of exotic vegetation and animal life while our treasure hunt continues! In the afternoon you can explore the private trails on your own, join a different boat tour, play Costa Rican games, or just relax and enjoy the lodge. (B, L)

Thursday: Tortuguero | Sarapiqui | Arenal

This morning the boat will take us back to the pier to be on our way toward Arenal, an ideal time to play and learn with Jorge, the white-faced monkey! One of our stops will be at the Costa Ricans’ favorite Ice cream parlor for a delicious treat! Later the treasure hunt continues with an adventure in the Rain Forest. Our stop in Sarapiqui will take us through an easy hike to explore La Selva Biological Reserve, part of the NGO, a nonprofit that performs research and education for responsible use of natural resources in the tropics. One of the ways to support this wonderful initiative is through ecotourism visits like ours. The destination is very special, and recognized worldwide by nature lovers for the many species that live there. We will see monkeys, sainos, gummies, owls, king vultures, limpets, and more. After our jungle adventure we will relax through lunch before we continue on our way to Arenal. The rest of the day is free to enjoy the lovely facilities of our hotel. (B, L)

Friday: Arenal

Today our treasure hunt and our Captain will take us to the Sky Adventures. First, we will board the Sky Tram to soar high above the treetops in a gondola for an unforgettable, bird’s-eye view of the magical mountains and jungle. We will then arrive at a wide observation platform on the highest point of the reserve to admire the best view yet. Later on, our sky adventure will continue on the hanging bridges, the Sky Walk. We will walk along the nature trails and cross these fascinating bridges, admiring the wonders of the untouched Costa Rican landscape around us while our Captain tells us the secrets of this enchanted wilderness. Our exciting day will end with dinner and time to relax at the hot springs. You can have fun splashing around in the numerous pools with different water temperatures, finding the one that’s just right for you. (B, D)

Saturday: Arenal | Monteverde

We will bid farewell to Arenal this morning to head toward the shores of La Fortuna Lake to admire the spectacular views, take pictures, have lunch, and enjoy a treasure hunt train journey before continuing to Monteverde. Upon arrival you will have some free time to relax or venture out to explore the town of Santa Elena on your own. At sunset, we will gather for a night walk through the private reserve. We will explore in the twilight, deep in the cloud forest to learn what happens with the animals and nature at dusk, when the day turns to night. Many species wake up at this time and start their nightly activities. You will be able to see many different insects, frogs, reptiles and some little mammals. (B, L)

Sunday: Monteverde

Today our Captain will take us to Santa Elena, and the treasure hunt adventure continues with a visit to the Selvatura Park to see the largest and strongest bridge system in Monteverde and walk across eight bridges. We will also pay a visit to the Butterfly, Insect, and Reptile exhibition where a controlled climate enables life for animal species from all around the world, presented in a way you have never seen before. This place is unique, unlike any place anywhere! This evening we will have another memorable experience enjoying a 7-course Costa Rican fusion dinner at San Lucas Treetop Dining on an elevated glass terrace in the middle of the forest overlooking the center of Monteverde. (B, L)

DAY 10
Monday: Monteverde | San Jose

Your morning is free in Monteverde to enjoy the area on your own or join a chocolate tour! In the afternoon we will head back to San Jose with an interesting stop for ice cream and to see some dinosaurs!! Upon arrival we will have an orientational tour of the city and you will have some free time if you wish to explore the Costa Rican capital on your own. In the evening, we will gather one last time to indulge in our farewell dinner at Casa de Piedra, a traditional restaurant. Our Costa Rican adventure will end with a final, fascinating activity—we will enjoy a bonfire while singing and dancing with a local Chaman, playing the drums and meditating to energize our souls the night before heading home. (B, D)
