After breakfast drive to Madaba, known worldwide for its magnificent Byzantine Orthodox churches and intricate mosaics, including one of the world’s oldest maps (of Jerusalem and the Holy Land) on the floor of St. George’s Church. Continue to Mount Nebo where John the Baptist died, and Moses contemplated the Holy Land. Drive to Kerak to visit restored Ottoman buildings from the 19th century and then on to Petra for dinner and overnight. (B,D)
After breakfast spend the day in the beautiful “rose city” often described as the eighth wonder of the world, Jordan’s most precious treasure and most visited site—a vast city carved of stone more than 2,000 years ago, at the crossroads of the silk and spice trade routes connecting China, India, Egypt, Syria, Greece, and Rome. Enter the city by horse-drawn carriage or donkey. Then drive to Wadi Rum to explore the magical desert, monuments, and canyons, and the tranquility of open spaces. Discover the 4,000-year-old rock drawings and other wondrous treasures of this vast desert and meet the Bedouins who have preserved their traditional way of life.
