Explore Old Havana to admire the ongoing restoration transforming this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visit the Old City plazas, gleaming colonial places, the Rum Museum and other landmarks. Late morning, visit the Experimental Graphics Studio, founded in 1962 with the support of Che Guevara. In the afternoon meet with members of the Havana Compas Dance Company which combines the essence of Spanish dance with Afro-Cuban rhythms. The evening is unplanned for you to choose from a variety of cultural options. (B,L)
Drive to Cienfuegos, Cuba’s “Pearl of the South,” founded by French colonists in 1819. Upon arrival, visit the Benny Moore School of Arts committed to arts education and training from primary school to the university level. After lunch, tour this historic colonial city and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Meet with members of the renowned Chorus of Cienfuegos, which was founded in 1962 and continues to preserve the tradition of a genuine choral repertoire. After dinner, meet the Committee for the Defense of the Revolution whose members form the local neighborhood block committee. (B,L,D)
Drive to the colonial city of Trinidad, also a UNESCO World Heritage site and the heart of Cuba’s cigar industry. Meet local entrepreneurs for cocktails and lunch. Afternoon tour of the romantic streets, lanes and plazas of this historic town. (B,L,D)
Visit the Botanical Gardens of Cienfuegos, one of the oldest institutions on the island. It began as a study in sugar cane and evolved into the study of exotic plants from as far away as India and China. (B,L,D)
Morning visit to the Antonio Nunez Jimenez Foundation, a non-governmental institution for culture and science, dedicated to the protection of the environment. Next, visit Finca Vigia “Lookout Farm,” which was Ernest Hemingway’s winter home from 1939 to 1960 and see the author’s 9,000 volume library, yacht and typewriter. Continue to the Muraleando Art Project where Cuban and international artists have used almost every available wall as a canvas for hundreds of beautifully painted murals.(B,L,D)
Visit the National Museum of Fine Arts that exhibits Cuban art collections from colonial times up to contemporary generations. After lunch, See one Cuba’s most interesting art projects, Fusterlandia, created by the native Cuban artist José Rodríguez Fuster. Travel to the port of Havana to the famous Almacenes de San Jose crafts market. (B,L,D)
