Arise early for an unforgettable encounter with the endangered Mountain Gorillas…the Gentle Giants! Following breakfast, transfer to national park offices to be assigned a gorilla family and tracking guide in groups of 8. The guide will brief you on the gorilla family and safety precautions before driving to the trailhead. Expect to walk between 2 and 8 hours in steep and sometimes muddy conditions with rain overhead, which requires a degree of (average) fitness. You will need your passport, waterproof hiking boots, and a light raincoat. To protect from stinging nettles, long pants and long-sleeved tops are recommended. A pair of old gardening gloves is helpful for grabbing onto vegetation while most lodges provide walking sticks handy for hiking downhill. A small waterproof backpack is an excellent idea to carry a light snack, bottled water, and protection for your camera.
Upon sighting the gorillas, spend one hour with them as they go about their daily life; crunching noisily on bamboo, playing with their young, wrestling among juveniles, and looking at you quizzically. Birdwatchers will be thrilled to discover a world of native species flying overhead. (B)
Depart the impenetrable forest of Bwindi on a morning flight to Entebbe International Airport for connection to your international flight. (B)
