Hanoi’s cuisine, art and architecture is strongly influenced by its French roots. Enjoy a tour of some of the city’s most remarkable sites, including the vast Ho Chi Minh Memorial Complex, including the mausoleum, Presidential Palace, Stilt House and museum; the 11th-century Temple of Literature, a peaceful series of walled courtyards and graceful gateways which is one of the best-preserved examples of traditional Vietnamese architecture; the Museum of Ethnology; and One Pillar Pagoda, one of Vietnam’s two most iconic temples.
Note: The Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum is closed Mondays, Fridays and during September and October. The Museum of Ethnology is closed Mondays. Some sites might be closed during Lunar New Year.
Morning drive to picturesque Halong Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and embark on your overnight cruise through the bay. Revel in the tranquility of the natural seascape dotted with around 2,000 islets, limestone cliffs and astonishing views. Stop for a visit in one of the caves and the picturesque floating villages. Disembark and transfer to the airport for your flight to Hue, the capital of Vietnam for more than 140 years. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel. (B)
Morning excursion to a relaxing boat journey on the Perfume River, passing traditional villages. On to the iconic, 7-story Thien Mu Pagoda, considered the most famous structure in the country. Then visit the Old Imperial City, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Modeled after China’s Forbidden City, this massive complex provides a fascinating glimpse into the court life of the Nguyen Dynasty. Continue to the Imperial Tombs of Minh Mang, Tu Duc and Khai Dinh and soak in the tranquil atmosphere, wandering among pavilions, courtyards and lotus ponds. (B)
Depart Hue by private car to Danang. Upon arrival, visit the Cham Museum with the finest collection of Cham sculpture in the world; stop to see the Marble Mountains. The five stone hillocks that rise sharply from the surrounding rice fields are riddled with caves and shrines. (B)
Tour the ancient village of Hoi An, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The colorful shops, houses and temples reflect a diverse heritage, best explored on foot. Then, a boat cruise down the scenic Thu Bon River. (B)
Morning flight to Ho Chi Minh City. Upon arrival, visit many of city’s interesting pagodas and classic European-style landmarks, including the Reunification Palace, formerly the Independence Palace of the South Vietnamese president that was famously stormed by tanks in 1975 signifying the fall of South Vietnam; the Emperor of Jade Pagoda, one of city’s most interesting pagodas; Notre Dame Cathedral; Thien Hau Pagoda, a 18th-century Chinese-style temple and the bustling Ben Thanh Market. Drive to the legendary Cu Chi Tunnels, a 125-mile-long underground network that stretched to the Cambodian border. Continue to Tay Ninh, visit the Cao Dai Temple, with its unique architectural style, and the country market. (B)
Depart to Cai Be, heart of Mekong Delta, and tour the colorful floating market by boat. En route stop at different Mekong River islands. Return to Ho Chi Minh City by car. (B)
