Arrive in Managua

Arrive in Managua, Nicaragua, meeting and transfer to your hotel. Today you will have a panoramic tour of Managua, the capital of Nicaragua since 1852. See the old city center in the northern part of the city before continuing to the south, being developed as the future downtown. You will see from your bus, the historic park of Loma de Tiscapa, ruins of the Presidential Palace, and the Park of Peace, Ruben Dario National Theater and the new Presidential House Palace of Culture. Ending with a visit to the arts and craft Huembes Market for souvenirs.


Early Depart from Managua to the rum factory. This morning visit the Flor De Cana Rum Factory where you will learn the history of how sugar cane came to the America’s the origin and development of rum worldwide. Witness the fascinating process used to process the rum, learn about the maintenance of the oak barrels, and see firsthand the impressive warehouses with hundreds of the oak barrels with 25-year -old rum. Enjoy a tasting session of 18-year-old rum, walk through the Flor de Cana Rum museum that shows evidence of the Pellas family business since 1890. Finish your visit with a stop at the Boutique where you can buy any of their high quality, versatile rums plus other interesting souvenirs to take back home. We then depart for the colonial city of Leon, founded in 1524 by Spanish conquistadors at the base of Momotombo Volcano. In 1610, constant earthquakes and volcanic activity made townspeople move Leon to its current location. Today, its colonial character lives on. You’ll enjoy Leon’s beautiful park and visit the unusual La Asuncion Cathedral, where you can climb up to the roof and take in an extraordinary panoramic view of the charming city and imposing mountains. Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant. Visit the colonial city officially known as Santiago de los Caballeros de Leon. This city has been the nation’s intellectual focus, because of its major university founded in 1813. Until the designation of Managua as the capital city of Nicaragua, Leon rivaled Granada for this position. The architecture of the homes and buildings of Leon are in grand neoclassical, gothic, baroque and colonial styles. Transfer back to D’Santos Reserve at Carazo. (B,L,D)


This morning we take a nature walk and learn about coffee. Since 1870 the D´Santos Hotel Boutique & Wildlife Reserve, the Rapaccioli family have been coffee growing. These pioneers of the area were awarded with a prestigious Dutch certification for their responsible coffee production. Strolling along the easy paths of the reserve with your naturalist tour guide will be just the beginning of a fascinating experience. You will learn about the traditional ways of cultivating shaded coffee, about the species of plants and their relationship with the fauna of the area. Keep your eyes open for iguanas, small mammals as well as dazzling butterflies and a large variety of birds like woodpeckers manakins and our national bird motmot. Having experienced the tropical forest, a delicious traditional lunch will be served at a beautiful Palapa. After lunch you will visit the Museum of History & Culture in Diriamba city that contains performances of traditional dances, and part of the history of representative icons of the city. It opened on 18 November 2010, in order to show the rich folk tradition, preserved by religious celebration by the veneration of San Sebastian, patron saint of the city of Diriamba. You will visit with your guide a local house, where you will learn a little more about this tradition from first hand. Dinner at the hotel (B, L, D)

Managua | Granada

Today, before you depart for Granada, you will visit San Juan de Oriente & Catarina Towns. Here you find beautiful arts and crafts and nurseries with beautiful flowers. We will also see the view from Catarina of the surrounding water and volcano landscape and get to know the Nicaraguan’s character, personality and way of life. In San Juan de Oriente you will visit a local house to see how they work the ceramic with their hands. Then you will go to Apoyo Lagoon to have lunch, rest, enjoy the beautiful view and learn about its history. Continue the transfer to Granada & Overnight. (B, L)


Start your day with a relaxing boat ride around some of the islands formed by the impressive Mombacho volcano. Enjoy great landscape views and wildlife. Your boat ride will be followed by a City Tour via horse drawn carriage. Granada was founded in 1524 is the oldest European settlement in the Americas. This ride will transport you 500 years back to the past. After your carriage experience you’ll walk around the main square and admire La Merced church, the famed convent of San Francisco where you’ll have the opportunity to see the mysterious stone idols, made by our Granada’s ancestors, as well as an impressive collection of genuine pre-Columbian sculptures. Lunch included at Local Restaurant. After Lunch you will depart to Masaya & visit the Market and artist workshop for local ceramics, hammocks wood and leather souvenirs. You then continue to the Masaya Volcano. You will see the impressive Santiago crater, active since 1946. Learn from your local expert how the Aratinga Strenua manages to live in the toxic crater walls as well as the history of the Spanish priests who explored the volcano and the superstitious beliefs held by the natives who inhabited the area. Get ready for an amazing sight as you watch a large number of bats departing massively from their caves. This is followed by a visit to an underground tunnel which was formed by lava streams. Equipped with flashlight and helmet you will enter the tunnel and observe the interesting rock formations. The tour ends with a visit to a viewpoint that provides the possibility to actually look inside the crater mouth of the volcano, observing the red, glowing lava. Back to Granada & overnight. (B, L)
