Easter Island

Morning visit Ana Kai Tangata, a cave that has many paintings made from mineral pigments found on the island. Next, continue to Ranu Kau, the second of the three main volcanoes that erupted about 2.5 million years ago. Then visit the volcano where the greatest concentration of petroglyphs exists. Your afternoon starts at the archaeological center which, in the 1960s, was the first site to be properly restored. The tour also visits Puna Pau, where the “pukao” or hats (topknots) that crowned the moai were made. (B)

Easter Island

Visit the ruins of the temple of Akahanga where you can see hats of the moai on the ground. Continue to the volcano where all the moai on the island were carved out of the rock. Climb to the edge of the crater of the volcano and see moai scattered about the inner slopes in various stages of construction. Continue to Ahu Tongariki, where many of the huge moai were toppled by a large “seaquake” in 1960. The tour ends at the beautiful Anakena Beach with time for a swim in the sea before returning to Hanga Roa. (B,L)
