Sunday: San Jose | Ciudad Colon | Turrialba

This morning our adventure begins! Our first stop is Ciudad Colon where we enjoy a short walk through the village and learn about the history and way of life. Later, we are welcomed into the house and workshop of a skilled local craftsman to learn about a very unique tradition in Costa Rica, the Masquerades. The craftsmen design and build masks of clay, paper and glue. They paint them and create what is called a “maroon.” This is a tradition that lives since the 17th century. The “maroons” can be different depending on many things, but they are always very funny, and meant to make people laugh. We will join the artist who will teach us and help us create our own masquerades! Later on, we will relax and enjoy a home-cooked meal, prepared by our host’s mother and sister in a wood powered kitchen, the traditional method. After we bid farewell to our hosts, we will be on our way to Turrialba. The evening in Turrialba is at leisure. (B, L)

Monday: Turrialba

Today we explore our surroundings. In the morning we travel back through time and learn about Costa Rica’s 3,000-year-old history with a visit to one of the largest and most important archeological sites, the Guayabo National Monument. Historians believe that nearly 10,000 people lived in this ancient city in pre-Columbian times, surrounded by lush jungle. The environment here is also rich with plant and animal life, home to a wide variety of birds and animals such as toucans, armadillos, squirrels, and coatis. We venture into town with our tour manager, grab a casual bite and enjoy some free time. In the afternoon we embark on a Golden Bean Coffee Tour at a local plantation. Here we experience daily life in this unique, natural environment that produces one of the best coffee grains in the world. We witness the process from farming, measuring, selecting, and weighing to the preparation for export to various parts of the world. Our crowning glory is tasting the finest Costa Rican coffee with five senses. We return to our hotel in the afternoon with time at leisure to relax or continue exploring on your own. (B, L)

Tuesday: Turrialba | Sarapiqui | Arenal

This morning we begin with an adventure in the Rain Forest. Our stop in Sarapiqui will take us through an easy hike to explore La Selva Biological Reserve, part of the NGO, a non-profit organization that performs research and education for responsible use of natural resources in the tropics. One of the ways to support this wonderful initiative is through ecotourism visits like ours. The destination is very special, and recognized worldwide by nature lovers, for the many species that live there. We will see monkeys, sainos, gummies, owls, king vultures, limpets, carpenters and more. After our jungle adventure we will relax at lunch before continuing on our way to Arenal. The rest of the day is free to enjoy the lovely facilities of our hotel or consult your tour manager for interesting excursions in the area. (B, L)

Wednesday: Arenal

Our day today is dedicated to Sky Adventures. First, we will board the Sky Tram that takes us high above the treetops in a gondola for an unforgettable experience of viewing the magical landscape from above—mountains and jungles seen from a bird’s-eye view. We will then arrive at a wide observation platform on the highest point of the reserve to admire the best view yet. Later on, our sky adventure will continue on the hanging bridges, the Sky Walk. We will walk through the natural trails and cross these fascinating bridges, admiring the wonders of untouched Costa Rican nature around us while an expert guide tells us the secrets held in this enchanted wilderness. Our exciting day will end with dinner and time to relax at the hot springs. With different water temperatures, you will be able to find the one just right for you. (B, D)

Thursday: Arenal | Monteverde

We bid farewell to Arenal this morning to head toward the shores of La Fortuna Lake to admire the spectacular views, take pictures, and have lunch before continuing to Monteverde. Upon arrival you will have some time to relax or venture out to explore the town of Santa Elena on your own. At sunset, we will gather for a night walk at the private reserve. We will immerse ourselves in the cloud forest to discover what happens with nature and wildlife at dusk, when day turns to night. Many species wake up at this time and start their nightly activities. You will be able to see many different insects, frogs, reptiles and some little mammals. (B, L)

Friday: Monteverde

Today we visit the Selvatura Park to see the largest and strongest bridge system in Monteverde and walk across eight bridges. We will also pay a visit to the Butterfly, Insect, and Reptile exhibition where a controlled climate enables life for animal speces from all around the world, presented in a way you have never seen before. This place is unlike any place anywhere! This evening we will have another memorable experience enjoying a 7-course Costa Rican fusion dinner at the San Lucas Treetop Dining experience on an elevated glass terrace in the middle of the forest overlooking the center of Monteverde. (B, L)

Saturday: Monteverde | San Jose

Your morning is free in Monteverde to enjoy the area on your own or join a chocolate tour! In the afternoon we head back to San Jose. Upon arrival we have an orientation tour and you will have some free time if you wish to explore the Costa Rican capital on your own. In the evening, we will gather one last time to indulge in our farewell dinner at Casa de Piedra, a traditional restaurant. Our Costa Rican adventure will end with one last but fascinating activity: We will enjoy a bonfire while singing and dancing with a local Chaman, playing the drums and meditating to energize our souls the night before heading home. (B, D)

Sunday: Depart San Jose

Today you will be picked up at the hotel and transferred to the airport for your homebound flight. (B)
