Day 1: Arrive in Managua
Upon arrival, meeting and transfer to your hotel. Later, have a panoramic tour of Managua, starting with the old city center. You will see from your bus, the historic park of Loma de Tiscapa, ruins of the Presidential Palace, and the Park of Peace, Ruben Dario National Theater and the new Presidential House Palace of Culture. End with a visit to the Huembes Market for souvenirs.
Day 2: Managua | Carazo
Morning visit to a rum factory where you will witness the fascinating process used to process the rum and enjoy a tasting session of 18-year-old rum. Then depart for the colonial city of Leon, founded in 1524 by Spanish conquistadors at the base of Momotombo Volcano. Enjoy Leon’s beautiful park and visit the unusual La Asuncion Cathedral, where you can climb up to the roof and take in an extraordinary panoramic view of the charming city and imposing mountains. After lunch at a local restaurant, continue to explore the city and its beautiful grand neoclassical, gothic, baroque and colonial styles buildings and home. (B,L,D)
Day 3: Carazo
Morning nature walk through the wildlife reserve to learn about coffee. The same family has been growing coffee in the reserve since 1870. Learn about the traditional ways of cultivating shaded coffee, about the species of plants and their relationship with the fauna of the area. Keep your eyes open for iguanas, small mammals as well as dazzling butterflies and a large variety of birds like woodpeckers manakins and our national bird motmot. After a delicious traditional lunch, visit the Museum of History & Culture in Diriamba city that contains performances of traditional dances in order to show the rich folk traditions of the city. Day 4: Carazo | Granada
Morning visit to San Juan de Oriente & Catarina Towns to see beautiful arts and crafts and nurseries with beautiful flowers. View the surrounding water and volcano landscape and get to know the Nicaraguan’s character, personality and way of life. Visit a local workshop to see how they work the ceramic with their hands. Then on to Apoyo Lagoon for lunch, rest and more beautiful scenery. Transfer to Granada. (B,L)
Day 5: Granada
Start your day with a relaxing boat ride around some of the islands formed by the impressive Mombacho volcano. Enjoy great landscape views and wildlife. Your boat ride will be followed by a city tour via horse-drawn carriage. Walk around the main square and admire La Merced church, the famed convent of San Francisco where you’ll have the opportunity to see the mysterious stone idols, as well as an impressive collection of genuine pre-Columbian sculptures. After a stop at the local market and an artist workshop, visit the Masaya Volcano, see its active Santiago crater and learn about its history. Then, equipped with flashlight and helmet, explore an underground tunnel that was formed by lava streams. You will be able to look inside the crater mouth of the volcano, observing the red, glowing lava. (B,L)
