Dubrovnik – The Pearl of the Adriatic
Simply put, Dubrovnik is captivating. And stunning. And awe-inducing. Add just about any superlative and it might fit with this southern Dalmatian Coast town of about 40,000 people. After all, there are few places on the planet where a walled medieval town meets the warm azure-colored sea. It’s no wonder this Croatian town has been the star of Hollywood films and TV shows, such as Game of Thrones.
There are some must-dos in Dubrovnik: walk the 1.2 miles of thick 80-foot high walls, offering superb vistas of the town and the Adriatic sea looming behind it; take the cable car up to the top of Mt. Srd (pronounced Serj) for an even more stupendous view of the compact Stari Grad, or Old Town; take the 15-minute ferry from the Old Port to Lokrum Island, the small verdant isle that lingers just outside of Old Town for excellent sunbathing, swimming, and hiking.
But after that, the thing to do in Dubrovnik is to just stroll around the limestone-clad streets, soaking up the medieval-meets-the-Mediterranean vibe of the place. Join the locals in the early evening as they do a đir—pronounced “dzeer,” and derived from the Italian “giro” for doing a “tour”—consisting of strolling the “wide” main street of Old Town, called Stradun, perhaps grabbing a seat at an outdoor cafe and sipping a glass of locally made white wine or a potent rakia, the fruit brandy that is ubiquitous in this part of the world.
