Most of the great temples were rebuilt under the leadership of Pericles during the Golden Age of Athens (460-430 BC). Phidias, a great Athenian sculptor, and Ictinus and Callicrates, two famous architects, were responsible for the reconstruction. During the 5th century BC, the Acropolis was given its final form. In 468 BC, Cimon and Themistocles ordered the reconstruction of the south and north walls, and Pericles entrusted the construction of the Parthenon to Ictinus and Phidias

HD Tour of Ancient Olympia Site & Museum
30 pax – $152 per person
Includes: 2 guides
A classic and impressive itinerary that takes you through the ruins of ancient Olympia, located in a mountainous landscape at the foot of Kronion Hill, approximately 1 hour from port.
Our expert guide will take us inside ancient Olympia, a complex of temples, houses of priests and athletes, and public buildings. Located in a valley along the Alpheus River, in the northwest of the Poloponnese, the city hosted, every four years, the famous sports competitions in honor of Zeus, called the Olympic Games. Here, for the first time in 776 BC. A list of winners was drawn up, possibly the result of the first Olympic Games in history. Among the ruins of ancient temples, along the cobblestones of ancient streets, formerly used by coaches, we will immerse ourselves in the past in that tense and joyful atmosphere in which, for five very long days, athletes competed in different disciplines. : wrestling, trainer and horse racing, pentathlon and pancratium (a primordial boxing). We will learn little secrets about the competition where only male Greek athletes were allowed, then it was opened to young Romans. We will discover anecdotes of women and slaves excluded from the town, temples and terraces, punished with a terrible death by jumping from a nearby cliff. We will stop at the old squares where merchants and citizens used to meet to do business.
At the end of the guided tour you will visit the museum, one of the most important in Greece, where you will see the famous statue of Hermes by Praxiteles. The permanent exhibition contains finds from excavations in the sacred precinct of Altis dating from prehistoric times to early Christian times. Among the numerous and precious pieces, the collection of sculptures, for which the museum is most famous, the bronze collection, the richest of its kind in the world, and the large collection of terracottas stand out.
